Movie fans, you know the drill – a late night movie marathon calls for snacks. When our eyes are peeled to the screen, our hand reaches for the bowl of potato chips and we mindlessly binge on such carbohydrate-laden snacks. Plus, this is probably happening around 9 pm onwards. We all know how late night eating can wreck even more havoc on you as the body is more likely to store these snacks as fats, which will prompt weight gain.

Therefore it’s best for you to swap out those unhealthy snacks in favor of these!

1. Avocado toast

This prized and incredibly popular fruit did not gain popularity for no reason. As one of the most nutritious fruit on the planet, a single avocado can contain up to 20 different vitamins and minerals. Branded as a ‘superfood’, the health benefits of an avocado range from arthritis treatment, diabetes management, promoting skin health to improving liver function, and the list goes on.

Even though it is considered a high-fat fruit, majority of the fat content is oleic acid, a monounsaturated fatty acid that reduces inflammation.

Hence, why not load up on a snack made with this incredible fruit? Superbly easy to make and definitely a crowd favorite, avocado toast requires only two main ingredients: avocados and bread. Of course you can add on seasonings and condiments but we do recommend you to keep it light and choose wholemeal bread if you can.

2. Bruschetta

Another simple and delicious snack, bruschetta is another light snack you and your fellow movie marathoners can share. Essentially made up of chopped tomatoes, olive oil, basil, garlic and balsamic vinegar, you can snack on this delightful nosh guilt-free!

Tomatoes are an excellent dietary source of powerful anti-oxidants and lycopene. This cancer-preventive fruit aids in keeping your eyes healthy, alleviating neuropathic pain and even counteracting brain cell degradation. As for the oil, the best choice is to use extra virgin olive oil, filled with oleic acid (similarly to avocado) for its anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties.

3. Edamame

As a popular appetizer served in Japan, edamame beans have also found its way into modern cuisine due to its ease of preparation and high nutritional value.

Highly favored among vegetarians for its high protein - a cup of it has around 17g of protein - making it around 1/3 of our required daily intake. It also contains calcium, phosphorus, iron and vitamin E, the basis for building healthy bones. Benefits like better lungs function, weight management are also attributed to edamame.

Also, edamame are easily available at any major supermarkets in frozen packs. Just lightly blanch them in salt water and they are ready to go.

4. Zucchini chips

Can’t live without chips? Substitute it with zucchini chips! Keep your store-bought, highly processed crisps away and make this low-starch and high fiber snack instead. Filled with vitamin B6, C and beta-carotene (pre-Vitamin A), this squash actually takes care of your cardiovascular health, improves digestion and collagen formation which makes for gorgeous hair and skin! Low on the glycaemic index (G.I), the zucchini will be slowly digested and absorbed, causing a slower rise in blood sugar levels. With high fiber content, zucchini also fills you up for longer.

Another easy to make snack, simply thinly slice your zucchinis coupled with garlic, drizzle olive oil in a pan, slide in a preheated oven and you are done.

5. Greek yogurt parfait

Here’s something sweet to wrap up the array of goodies you’ve whipped up: a beautiful yogurt parfait!

When it comes to store selection of yogurt, go for Greek yogurt as it has much lesser sugar and half the amount of carbohydrates. Not to mention, Greek yogurt is usually much creamier too. Yogurt also contains calcium and probiotics which are good bacteria for your gut.

Layer your yogurt parfait with fresh fruits like berries, kiwi and granola or whole-grain cereal for that satisfying crunch.
